“white-tailed deer as a reservoir for previous SARS-CoV-2 variants”

The word “previous” is just another word for “still here” in some cases I guess (Mass Production of Pandemics).

As a deer hunter in the Northern Tier of NYS I have followed the white tail deer story. The big question is how did SARS-CoV-2 get disseminated from humans to deer so quickly. It seems to me that the most likely answer is fecal-oral transmission from humans to deer. During COVID surges in our communities sewer water contains 1-8 million copies SARS-CoV-2 RNA per liter. With widespread infection and the close association of WTD with humans it seems reasonable this could be the source of the initial infections with subsequent deer to deer transmission and deer specific mutations occurring to increase fitness in the WTD population.
