Google influenza vaccine finder

by Vincent Racaniello on 13 November 2009

We’ve made no secret of our enthusiasm for the vaccine against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. To help you find locations near you for obtaining both the seasonal and 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, Google has developed a feature for the US called the flu shot finder at www.google.com/flushot.

Google notes on their blog that this project is just beginning and information has not yet been received about flu shot clinics for many locations. Many locations that are shown are also out of stock.

Google has been working with HHS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health agencies to gather information on flu vaccine locations across the country for both the nasal-spray vaccine and the inactivated vaccine shot. Data for locations of flu vaccine are currently available from 20 states with more expected daily.

I was admittedly tempted to cry tears of joy after finding out that the PA dept. of health is offering H1N1 shots to anyone in my age group next weekend, by appointment. I spent the summer tracking the nasty trail of this virus, and now as a (fairly healthy) 20 year old freshman in college, I'm surrounded by illness on a daily basis.

I've followed TWiV for several months now, but I forgot--which vaccine type do you recommend for healthy young adults? Spray or injection? We have a choice on the consent form.
  • My preference is the nasal spray - Flumist - which is what my three kids (all < 18 years age) received last week after waiting on line. It mimics natural infection without the symptoms.

Great link! Any ideas when the vaccine will be made available to people without underlying health conditions?
